BSB Delhi Organized the First International Conference on Traditional to Contemporary
Management Practices
Bangalore School of Business, Delhi organized its first international conference on ‘Traditional to Contemporary Management Practices: A Paradigm Shift’ on March 6, 2010.
The school was privileged to have prominent academicians, researchers and experts from the industry to grace the occasion. Some of the guests and panelists who participated and spoke at the conference were, Dr. P C Jain, Principal, Sri Ram College of Commerce, Dr. Promod Batra, a noted motivational speaker, Mr. H L Passi, General Manager, Unitech Amusement Parks and Mr. Atul Agarwal, National Training Head, Samsung India.
In keeping with our tradition and culture, the opening ceremony commenced with the lighting of lamps and singing the hymn Eesh Vandana. This was followed by the release of the first edition of the bi-annual journal – “Wisdom Voyage”, by Dr. Jain. The journal covered topics highlighting paradigm shift in different criteria in diverse fields like Global Banking, Mergers and Acquisitions, Retail, International Business, Special Economic Zones, Accounting Practices, Workforce Diversity, Supply Chain Management, Spirituality at Workplace, application of Six Sigma as a management tool, Social Network Marketing and E-services.
BSB Delhi received a sparkling response when it invited papers for the first issue of the journal “Wisdom Voyage.” We received 35 papers out of which 30 papers were from domestic researchers and five papers were from foreign researchers. The editorial board selected 15 papers for the journal and three international papers were presented in abstentia. The international papers were from Saudi Arabia, China and the UK.
The conference began with the opening remarks by Dr. P.C. Jain. He talked about innovation not only in work place but also in methods of teaching and delivery of new information to the students. Dr. Jain laid emphasis on the need to change the mindset of students in relation to the current needs of the corporate. In his view, more faculties with industrial experience are required to impart relevant practical knowledge to the students to facilitate active learning.
The audience was next charmed and motivated by Dr.Promod Batra. His presentation was full of humor, anecdotes and wise thoughts. According to him, we all must follow the GITA –‘do your Karma’. He also laid emphasis on the need for being a good human being, above our qualifications and experiences. He said those who get amply rewarded by the society are not misers.
Mr. Atul Agarwal chaired the first technical session. At the outset, he expressed his view on the current managerial trends. Mr. Agarwal felt that there was a definite need for shift in management education from the traditional to one more tuned to contemporary style of functioning of the corporate.
Thereafter, the dynamic researchers presented their papers highlighting the innovations in their fields of study and significance to the management problems. The papers did factor the current and the changing variables in the management practices in different sections of the industry at both micro and macro levels.
Mr. H.L. Passi presided over the second session. He gave an insight into the new concept in India regarding amusement Parks. Mr. Passi shared his long and varied work life experience of 35 yrs with the audience. He explained how it was necessary to train and retain a motivated workforce in the service industry. This requires screening at the induction stage as well as continuous monitoring of their performances during service.
The audience was quite interactive. The question and answer sessions after each presentation evoked considerable interest. The panelists also contributed their rich experience.
Valedictory session was addressed by Prof H.C. Mathur and Prof B.P. Sarkar. Prof H C Mathur highlighted the role of technology in management practices, especially when optimum decision had to be taken with limited resources or in limited time. Prof B.P. Sarkar highlighted the main themes of the presentations and their relevance in changing environment in which the contemporary management is required to function.
Dr. Tanu Arora, Campus Head, BSB Delhi gave a thought provoking concluding speech and noted how BSB curriculum was relevant according to current requirement of the industry. She said, “The curriculum at BSB is not static but subject to continuing adaptation and innovation.”
In conclusion, Prof. Kanwal Thakkar, Dean (Academics), BSB thanked the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, panelists, presenters, participants, sponsors and the Management for making the Conference a success. She hoped future conferences at BSB would attract even greater participation from all concerned.
The international conference was a resounding success considering the participants’ interaction and variety of subjects discussed on relevant current issues.
